HISTORY OF DRAGON BOAT

In North America, dragon boats are constructed of either wood or fiberglass and typically hold 20 people paddling in unison. A drummer sits at the front of the boat and beats out the timing while a steerer stands at the back with a long oar to control the boat's direction. Dragon boat racing requires a great deal of teamwork, as each crew has to paddle together with synchronized technique and timing.

Dragon boat racing is an ancient Chinese sport that has become a global phenomenon. It is an annual event held in over 40 countries around the world.

Traditionally, dragon boat racing is celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month of the Chinese calendar, but today the races are held on various dates throughout the summer.

In the U.S. alone, there are several hundred clubs and teams that compete annually in the sport of dragon boat. According to Paddler Magazine, dragon boat racing is the fastest growing water sport and the second most popular water sport in the world. Enthusiasts of all ages can participate with any level of physical fitness.
