The Marathon Dragon Boat Challenge 2004
Miami, FL July 30, 2004 -- The United Chinese Association of Florida (UCAF) presents first Florida's long distance Marathon Dragon Boat Challenge on August 14, 2004 (Saturday).
True champions have the heart of a dragon and real dragons rise with the morning sun, so. The Marathon will start bright and early at 8:00 a.m. with the traditional ‘Dragon Eye Dotting Ceremony' at Riverwalk - 201 SW 5 Avenue, downtown Fort Lauderdale (Breakfast and Morning Tea will be provided).
The Dragon Boat Marathon participants will begin their beautiful, picturesque race from the docks of Riverwalk and race all the way to Haulover Beach Park & Marina - 10800 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach (Bar-B-Que lunch will be provided).
Participants will experience the splendor and awe-inspiring wonder of South Florida's historic Intracoastal Waterway.
All participates will receive a 'Marathon Dragon Boat Challenge' commemorative T-shirts, a Certificate of Physical Endurance and a gift pack from UCAF. This specially-designed T-shirt allows its owner to re-live and cherish this historic once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Background:
The United Chinese Association of Florida's (UCAF) mission is to enhance the harmony of this diverse society, through sponsorship of social, cultural and educational activities. The UCAF is the organizer of South Florida Dragon Boat Festival.
The UCAF has designed the routes as well as the race distance as a new challenge for the dragon boat paddlers.
Distance-wise, this is the longest Dragon Boat Race in North America and the third longest in the world!
Participants will paddle dragon boats for 32 kilometers down the Intracoastal Waterway from Fort Lauderdale to Dania, Hallandale, Hollywood, Sunny Isles and Miami Beach.
The UCAF Dragons, OCA Dragons and South Florida Kung Fu Academy from South Florida will be among several dragon boat teams.
The purpose of this historic Marathon Dragon Boat Challenge is to help raise funds for a "rescuer boat" to ensure the safety of paddlers for the 2nd Annual South Florida Dragon Boat Festival to be held on October 16-17 – Haulover Beach Park and Marina, Miami Beach, FL.
The historic Florida Marathon Dragon Boat Challenge is co-sponsored by the City of Fort Lauderdale, Miami-Dade County Parks & Recreation Department - Haulover Beach Park & Marina, Coral Springs Chinese Culture Association, Florida Chinese Federation and Organization of Chinese Americans - South Florida Chapter.
